Shelbourne - James S.

Source: Waveland Independent newspaper, Waveland, Montgomery County, Indian March 22, 1901

-- James Shelbourne, the old man who carried the mail between Rockville and Hollandsburg for the last 10 years died very suddenly, Monday night. He was a cousin of Dr. Shelburne of Zionsville. Dr. Shelburne was in town Monday looking cheerful, but much thinner. Traveling is training (sic) him down, but he can stand it. He is now dispensing pills by wholesale, whereas ordinary doctors do a retail business only. Suffering humanity puts up with a lot. -- kbz
Thanks to my Montgomery listserve friends, we can now add some more information on James because we thought he deserved more than his cousin has in the above obit:)

James was born in Shelby County, Kentucky in August 1828. He may/may not have served in the Civil War but did marry his-life-long love, Mary Ann McClain there on the 16th of January 1861. Not long after they moved to Indiana. There is a James found in the 1850 census the right age living with assumedly a brother, Edward A. and in the 1860 Shelby Co KY census a James the right age is living with Joanna 64 Shelbourne and several others likely his bros/sisters. In the 1900 census, Mary Ann says she is the mother of 7 children with only 2 living. It is known for sure they had a daughter, Mary E. Shelbourne who married #1 Lawson Hobson Carter 3 Nov 1880 in Parke County. She had two Carter children, Ora and Catherine. Don't think Ora was ever married but Catherine married Fred Otis Payton and had at least one child, Hubert.
James died the 18th of March 1901 and is buried in the Mt. Moriah Cemetery at Hollandsburg, Parke County, Indiana.
If anyone knows more about this couple and especially James, please let me know !
